Patti J. Nelson was a philanthropist who provided energy to many organizations in our community including the Evans City Public Library. James A. Nelson maintains this legacy by initiating sparks that keep this in our forefront. With the support of the Patti J. Nelson Foundation, the library has grown as a community resource for those in Callery, Evans City Borough, Forward Township, and other visitors. It is a welcoming place for all.

In the past year the borough and community organizations have worked together to enhance this feeling by renewing the community room. It is now bright and vibrant, and we give thanks to them. In addition, the awarding of a Keystone Grant enabled the library to repoint bricks, insert energy efficient windows, and provide outdoor lighting with safety in mind. While a blessing, this grant also required the library to match funds. Keeping Patti’s positive attitude, we moved ahead.

In addition to the typical library activities, there have been Meal Planning and Ancestry workshops, Mail Art exhibits, Breakfast with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, and Creative Art displays. Did you see the paper dresses? The gigantic snowflake or the flag? We give thanks to the dedicated and imaginative staff who make this place so unique.

Governmental agencies provide operating costs for only half of the year. This is supplemented by fundraising activities, donations, fund drives, and an extraordinary group, the Patti J. Nelson Foundation. The Evans City Public Library’s staff, board, volunteers, and patrons offer our gratitude to the Nelson family and to all who support this foundation.
